1955 Mercedes Gullwing custom
- The ultimate hotrod!
1955 Mercedes Benz 300 sl Gullwing. Featured in magazines around the world. Totally customised,in 1997 in Florida. This awesome car features a racing engine, 1 of 3 engines manufactured by Chevrolet: a transamerican 330 c.i.d. 880 hp v6 with twin blowers coupled to a B&M 350 Turbo aut. transmission . Engine has Moldex crank, Carillo rods, J&E 7.50: 1 pistons, Crane rollercam,ported and polished aluminium heads, MSD ignition and more. Perched on the sides of the custom aluminium manifolds is a pair of side-draft Weber carbs sending fuel to a siamesed pair of Eaton blowers that produce 16 pounds of boost and ( collectively) 880 horsepower at 6000 rpm!
Custom made 11/2 inch square tube frame, Ford 9 inch rear with a 3.80 : 1 ratio. Mustang 5.0 rear suspension pieces, Koni coil-overs fitted inside custom built Heidt's stainless A-arms attached to Mustang spindles in front.
Eleven inch power disc brakes equipped with Wilwood proportioning valves and stainless lines handles the stopping while a Walker four core radiator takes care of cooling.
Budnik 16 inch Raptor wheels & B.F Goodrich radials get the chassis up and rolling. Super straight body has most chrome removed. The smooth hood and deck are now electrically operated, rising on custom fabricated billet arms. Bumpers were eliminated and the rounded rear fenders now feature handcrafted, cat's eye-shaped taillights, while roofmounted center brakelights
occupy the original roofvents. Custom halogen headlights and unique billet grille.( machined by Diener).A video-camera in rear window feeding a 5 inch Sony monitor in dash replaces sideview mirrors inside,and there are no obvious switches or gauges anywhere.
These are all hidden in the center armrest. Instruments are mounted behind glass in center of dash and appear when ignition is on. Everything in the rounded, aviation style cockpit has been covered in white leather, including the Budnik steeringwheel and the inside of the trunk. It's just gorgeous!
